The 9 Parts of Speech

1.Nouns

Words for people, places & things.

E.g.

  • girl

  • boy

  • Krishna

  • Emily

  • school

  • cafe

  • Korea

  • Spain

  • beauty

  • friendship

2. Verbs

Action words.

E.g.

  • To sing

  • To dance

  • To eat

  • To write

  • To read

  • To pay

  • To ride

  • To study

3. Pronouns

Short words used instead of a noun.

E.g.

  • you

  • they

  • us

  • them

  • her

  • some

  • few

  • many

4. Article

E.g.

  • a

  • an

  • the

5. Adjectives

Words which describe nouns.

E.g.

  • beautiful

  • scary

  • happy

  • pretty

  • delicious

  • tall

6. Adverbs

Words which add info to verbs.

E.g.

  • quickly

  • delicately

  • truthfully

  • really

  • here

  • outside

  • yesterday

  • almost

  • very

7. Interjections

Exclamations.

E.g.

  • Ah!

  • Dear me!

  • Eww!

  • Bah!

  • Bless you!

  • Oh no!

  • Well, duh!

8.Conjunctions

Connecting words

E.g.

  • till

  • who

  • both

  • such

  • as

9.Prepositions

Words & phrases which tell us 3 main things.

  1. The position of something.

  2. The time when something happens.

  3. The way in which something is done.

E.g.

  • down

  • opposite

  • during

  • to

  • on

  • by

  • around

  • because

  • in place of

  • due to

CREATE

Activity One: Mix up & Match!

  • Cut the printable into 18 pieces

  • Mix up the 18 slips of paper

  • Lay on a table in a heap

  • Match all 9 pairs

Activity Two

  • Time yourself matching all 9 pairs

  • Challenge your friends

Grammar Games

  • Cut the printable into 18 pieces

  • Stick onto 18 cards

  • Decorate the cards with examples

Decorate each card with examples

  • Use colour pens, stickers & apps to decorate your cards.

Conjunction Card Two

Activity Three

  • Mix up the 18 cards

  • Put all the 18 cards face up on a table

  • Match all the 9 pairs

Activity Four

  • Mix up the 18 cards

  • Put all the 18 cards face down on a table

  • Turn over 2 cards

  • keep a correct pair

  • Return incorrect pairs face down on the table

  • Keep playing until all the pairs have been matched
